During the Spring 2025 semester, as part of one of my design courses at KU, I had the opportunity to create a mural for the University of Kansas Jayhawk Welcome Center. The mural was for the KU Student Ambassadors and would be installed in the room they use to work, gather, and collaborate.

Through this process, I created a mural concept based on interviews with the student ambassadors, then presented my concept to the Jayhawk Welcome Center team and ambassadors. My design was then voted on and selected by the ambassadors, and finally installed as a vinyl mural in May.

The mural design itself represents the traditions that make KU and the student experience at KU so special. The mural’s theme is “Towering Towards the Blue” - a vital part of the KU Alma Mater and the KU culture. Each element and tradition included the mural interacts with the sky or moving upwards, reflecting this idea of “towering towards the blue.”

I felt very honored with the opportunity to create and illustrate this mural. And I had a ton of fun! From the start, it was important to the ambassadors that the mural convey tradition in a fresh, modern way. So I loved putting a more graphic, mid-century influence in the illustration style.
